Objectives

Our goals at Luxcelis Technologies are to design and produce innovative CNC laser technology with superior results, and to provide our clients with exceptional and meticulous engineering services. Our machines are designed and manufactured in the USA with American and European parts. If you have questions or would like to join our team, please get in touch.

History

The short pulse laser machining program was established and funded to address critical needs in both diesel and aerospace industries. The program team was comprised of technology providers and industry users. Team members consisted of manufacturers of laser systems, machine tools, diesel engines, and members of the aerospace industry.
The first prototype short pulsed (nanosecond) laser system and trepanning device were developed and tested. A 5-axis prototype CNC laser machining system was designed.
The first 5-axis prototype CNC laser machining system was built and exhibited at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago to demonstrate the process of laser drilling of diesel injector nozzles.
The first version of PC based CNC software for the laser machine was completed. The software was developed based on an industrial motion control hardware and it consisted of modules of HMI, PLC, motion hardware interface, etc.
The pre-commercial prototype, named “Orion,” 5-axis laser machining system was developed. This system integrated a picosecond laser unit and a newly developed trepanning technology to substantially improve the drilling quality. The achieved roundness was less than 2% at both sides, the K factor of reversed taper was greater than 5, and the Ra was less than 0.2µm.
A diesel manufacturing member of the program began testing the OrionTM prototype in drilling of injector nozzle holes.
Under continuous tests, OrionTM successfully drilled cylindrical and reversed tapper holes within the diameter range of 0.1 to 0.5mm, and inclined holes at angles of 90 to 25 degrees in 1mm thick metal plates.
The new generation of software for the CNC laser machine was developed based on the advanced PC based real-time motion control technology to satisfy the requirement of complicated trepanning motions. This approach avoided the limitations of standard industrial motion hardware.
The first commercial version the OrionTM machine was sold to a client that manufactures diesel engines. The machine was designed with a user-friendly approach and compact size. A new generation of trepanning device and a picosecond laser unit (suitable for work in mass production environments) was incorporated in the unit.
The diesel injector tooling fixture, along with the back-wall protection technology, was developed. The delivered OrionTM machine was used in high-volume production of diesel injector nozzle drilling and small parts machining at the client's site.
The new version of diesel injector tooling fixture and the laser back-wall protection device were developed. The tooling device can be operated manually and pneumatically for automatic production.
Luxcelis Technologies developed a new version of the OrionTM machining system by integrating a new generation of femtosecond pulsed laser system. The machining quality and system reliability were substantially improved, along with providing sharper drilled entry edges.
